Because we believe it can be an invaluable tool for historical and genealogical research, the Gratiot County Historical and Genealogical Society has reprinted the first history of Gratiot County, Michigan. Old copies have become exceedingly rare and costly; they sell at auction for $200.00 or more.

The 705 pages includes a new every name index, 685 biographical sketches and 111 portraits as well as county history.

Specifically the history relates those events and names of persons involved in the official organization of the county in 1855 and the selection of Ithaca as the county seat.

Further pages describe fur trading, the first permanent settlers and Indian history.

Each township and the three major villages of Alma, Ithaca, and St. Louis have their histories included. There are vivid descriptions of pioneer life as well as the political scene, the local press and the railroads.

Finally, there is a notable discussion of the populace's participation in the Civil War. Lists of volunteers and their experiences are included. Social and economic hardships are described.

The book has been produced on acid-free, archival paper, and is hard-cover, library bound quality, 8 1/2" x 11" in size.
