Besides the Chippewa Indians, who were here previously, the earliest families settled the area in 1854. Prior to that time, only Indians and passing trappers and land speculators passed the area. Pioneer families included; John & Richard Crispel, Henry Clark, Moses White, Charles Chick, W.S. Everest, Richard Houck, Tom Haynes, Alex Chapman, Jacob Snyder, Joseph Bennett, Proctor Campbell, Peter Pendell, Franz Manecke, Arad Lindsay and others who set up New Haven as it's own little community. New Haven was organized in 1863 under the name "New Haven Center". The first postmaster of New Haven was Pioneer Joseph Wiles. By the turn of the century, this very rural agricultural area of sprawling flatlands was chiefly a farming community that utilized the resources of the surrounding communities for supplies and entertainment. In 1904 it was reorganized as "New Haven" township.
